New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma played an outstanding innings of 74 off 39 deliveries, guiding India secure a thrilling six-wickets victory over Pakistan in the Super Four clash of the Asia Cup on Sunday. India once again avoided shaking hands with the arch-rivals Pakistan, with no exchanges before or after the game. Although India is the official host of the eight-nation Asia Cup, the T20 tournament is being held in the United Arab Emirates, as India and Pakistan can’t face on home soil.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav has earlier mentioned that the team is following the rules and regulations given by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the government, which state that players should not shake hands with Pakistani cricketers.
Abhishek’s brilliant half-century, featured a six off the first ball, which helped India successfully chase the target. Vice-captain Shubman Gill also scored quick 47 from 28 balls, while Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson closed the innings, helping India reach 174-4 in 18.5 overs.
Talking about the first innings, Pakistan managed to post 171/5 in their 20 overs. Opener Sahibzada Farhan was the top scorer for Pakistan as he smashed 58 off 45 balls, but the middle overs saw a loss of momentum. Faheem Ashraf’s unbeaten 20 helped Pakistan to a competitive total, though it soon became evident that the score would be challenging to defend against India’s powerful batting lineup.
This was the second Asia Cup meeting between the two teams, a week prior, India had defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in Group A clash.
After India secured victory over Pakistan, a remark by Rohit Sharma from the 2019 World Cup went viral. When he was named Player of the Match, a Pakistani journalist asked him for advice for Pakistan’s batters, who, according to Rohit, were experiencing a ‘crisis.’
Rohit responded jokingly, “Agar main Pakistan ka coach bana to main bataunga, abhi kya bataunga! (If I become the coach of Pakistan then surely I will tell you. What can I say now!),” he said.
India is scheduled to play their next Super 4 match against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
