Mumbai: Alastair Cook finally managed to break Sachin Tendulkar’s 11-year-old record by becoming the youngest batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs. Cook achieved this feat during the Second Test between England and Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street. Also Check- Eng vs Sl, 2nd Test 2016- Full Scorecard
At the start of England’s second innings, Cook needed just five more runs to enter the 10k club. The left-hander was chasing the record since the start of three-match Test series against Sri Lanka and needed 36 runs. He was dismissed for only 16 runs in England’s lone innings in the first Test, which the home side won by an innings and 88 runs.
The England skipper then had his chance to enter the record book at the start of second Test needing 20 runs. However, he fell short again and was dismissed for 15 runs in the 1st innings.
Cook now reaches the milestone aged 31 years and 157 days old while Tendulkar was 31 years and 326 days old when he scored his 10,000th Test run in 2005 against Pakistan.
The left-handed batsman also became the first England batsman to reach 10,00 Test runs.
With Cook now surpassing Tendulkar, former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has dropped to third place from second on the youngest batsmen to reach 10,000 Test runs list. Kallis was 33 years and 163 days old when he reached the milestone in 2009 against Australia.
While chasing a target of 79, Cook scored the required five runs to break the record. Following on, Sri Lanka managed to score 475 runs, courtesy Dinesh Chandimal’s century, in their 2nd innings to make England bat again.
