Over 50 people were killed during the celebrations of Dusshera when a train mowed over people standing across the tracks to watch the burning of the Ravana effigy. The incident created instant panic among the people as their happiness had turned into tragedy. The tragic episode took place near Joda Phatak area of Choura Bazar. According to reports at least 300 people had gathered to watch Ravana being burnt when it happened. Left deeply saddened by the episode, cricketers took to Twitter to offer condolences to families affected. Virender Sehwag took to Twitter and his post read, “Just heard about the Heart-wrenching news of the terrible train accident in Amritsar. My prayers for the families affected. He was not the only cricketer. Indian ODI opener Shikhar Dhawan also sent a message. His post read, “Extremely saddened to see the loss of lives in Amritsar #trainaccident. Deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”
Harbhajan Singh’s tweet read, “Deeply saddened by the unfortunate train incident that occurred in
#Amritsar. It’s unfortunate what the people went through. My heart goes out to the families and friends who lost their loved ones.”
Post the tragedy, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh announced compensation of INR 5 lakhs to kin of the deceased in the incident, while the railways have issued helpline numbers for those affected. “Rushing to Amritsar to personally supervise relief and rescue in tragic rail accident on Dussehra in Amritsar. My government will give Rs 5 lakh to kin of each deceased and free treatment to injured in government and private hospitals. District authorities have been mobilised on war footing,” Singh tweeted.
