Former Australian A-league footballer (Australia’s top-flight football league) Andy Brennan on Tuesday became the first Australian footballer to reveal about his sexuality and come out as gay. He posted on social media to open up about his sexuality.

“It’s taken me years to get comfortable saying this – I’m gay. I was scared it would affect my friendships, my teammates, and my family. But the support of the people around me has been so great and helped me get to the final step; being completely open. Being open is the best way for me to feel most comfortable and be myself. So… carry on,” he wrote on Instagram.

Brennan played for Newcastle Jets in the A-league between 2015 and 2017. He currently plays for Victorian National Premier League side Green Gully.

American player Colin Martin, who plays for Minnesota United is believed to be the only gay male player, playing in top division football around the world.

However, former Germany and Aston Villar star Thomas Hitzlsperger came out as gay in 2014.
