He was critical of the action to replace the selection committee after the original committee had picked the World T20 squad.He appeared to target the current Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Chairman Thilanga Sumathipala, also the current Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Ranatunga was among the candidates whom Sumathipala defeated at the SLC election held in January. He urged the sacking of the SLC administration to be replaced by an interim committee.
