Guus Hiddink’s last league game in his previous tenure as Chelsea interim manager ended in a happy note at the Emirates. The Blues hammered their city rivals 4-1 and the Dutchman’s stay finished on an excellent note. Days later, Chelsea went on to win the FA Cup too. A lot has changed at Stamford Bridge ever since. Well, a lot has changed from where things finished seven months ago. The defending champions have been brought to their knees, Jose Mourinho was booted out as manager but the fact that Hiddink was called upon to rescue Chelsea remained a recurring theme.

Arsenal are no longer the same side that Hiddink encountered back then. They now have a stronger spine and in the decade that went by, there has never been so much optimism bustling through the team, they really think they can win the title, shrugging off all claims of another false dawn. The spine is stronger and are no longer getting bullied by the heavyweights. As a matter of fact, the Gunners got the ball rolling this season by inflicting a defeat on the opponents they’ll face today.

However, Chelsea got their revenge against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in an ill-tempered, acrimonious contest which saw defender Gabriel seeing red while Diego Costa, inexplicably stayed on the pitch. The Chelsea striker would go on to be the difference between the two sides in that contest. Undoubtedly, the Brazilian-born striker would be the Arsenal faithful’s enemy No 1. Former fan-favourite Cesc Fabregas, now plying his trade with Chelsea got a mixed reaction last year but there is a sense of betrayal that lingers in the hearts of certain fans in the North London club. Mesut Ozil is in red-hot form and is easily the player to watch out for in this contest.

Predicted lineups:

Arsenal:

Petr Cech; Hector Bellerin, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal; Mathieu Flamini, Aaron Ramsey, Joel Campbell, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud

Chelsea:

Thibaut Courtois; Branislav Ivanovic, Kurt Zouma, John Terry, Cesar Azpilicueta; Nemanja Matic, John Obi Mikel, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Willian; Diego Costa
