Asian Games 2018 at Jakarta And Palembang Day 9: Neeraj Chopra not only won historic gold in men’s javelin event at the ongoing Asian Games 2018 but also equalled Milkha Singh’s feat from 60 years ago. Milka and Neeraj are now the only athletes to win gold in the same year in Commonwealth Games and Asiads. Former great Milkha Singh did it in 1958 in his favoured 200, 400-metre race, whereas Neeraj Chopra has done it in the javelin.

Chopra throw of 88.06-metre also broke the national record, apart from making him the first Indian to win a gold in the respective event.

Meanwhile, The Flying Sikh, as Milkha is popularly known did it in Tokyo in 200, 400 metres and did the same in Cardiff in the Commonwealth Games. On the other hand, Chopra’s shot to fame when in 2016 he won the World U20 Championships, breaking the junior world record as well. Earlier this year, he won gold in the same event in GoldCoast, Australia.
After the victory, Neeraj dedicated his win to the late former prime minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee – “The competition was good, I had trained well and was focused on getting a gold medal for the country. I dedicate my medal to Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji who was a great man: Neeraj Chopra on winning gold medal in men’s javelin throw final at the Asian Games 2018,” he said.
At the end of Day nine, China continues to top the points standings in the ongoing Asian Games 2018 as they once again top the medals tally after a stellar show with 85 Gold, 62 Silver and 43 Bronze. They are followed by Japan with 43 Gold, 36 Silver and 56 Bronze, on the third position are the Republic of Korea with 28 Gold, 35 Silver and 42 Bronze.
India currently stands at the ninth spot in Asian Games medals tally with – 8 Gold, 13 Silver and 20 Bronze taking their total tally to 36 after star Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra added a gold.
