Before the Boxing Day Test, which is the fourth match of the five-Test series, England lost all of the first three games. As a result, Australia sealed the Ashes in just 11 days of play.
For the fourth Test against England, Australia have decided not to bring in another main spinner to replace the injured Nathan Lyon. Instead, they have picked a squad with more fast bowlers. Lyon suffered a serious hamstring injury during the Ashes-winning match in Adelaide and later had surgery, after which off-spinner Todd Murphy was added as backup. However, due to the grass-heavy pitch at the MCG, Murphy was left out when Australia named their squad on Thursday.
Along with Lyon, captain Pat Cummins and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis will also miss the match. Fast bowlers Jhye Richardson, Brendan Doggett, and Michael Neser have been added to the squad, with Richardson hoping to play his first Test in more than four years after a series of injuries. Experienced batter Usman Khawaja was chosen ahead of Inglis after making scores of 82 and 40 in the Adelaide Test.
England have already announced their playing XI. Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the rest of the series due to injury. Gus Atkinson will come in to replace Archer, while Jacob Bethell has been selected instead of Ollie Pope.
The fourth Test between Australia and England will be played from Friday, December 26, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The match will begin at 5:00 AM IST.
