Australia vs India 3rd Test Melbourne: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor suggested the openers for the Boxing Day Test, where he wants Mayank Agarwal to open with Ravichandran Ashwin, which should come as a surprise. Murali Vijay and KL Rahul have flopped and Prithvi Shaw has been sent back as he picked up an injury, hence he wants India to try Ashwin at the top. He also mentioned that he was disappointed as Shaw will miss the series. His post read, “The departure of @PrithviShaw is a bigger setback than the Test loss to Australia. Perhaps we should ask @ashwinravi99 to open with MayankAggarwal now? He has an organised defence & a calm head on his shoulders. And that wld free up a slot for a middle-order bat or all-rounder.”
Tharoor feels Ashwin has a good technique and his opening would also open up a slot in the middle-order, which would make the team more balanced. It is no secret that the political bigwig is an avid cricket lover. The current form of both openers KL Rahul and Murali Vijay has been absolutely disappointing. While Rahul has 48 runs in four innings, Vijay betters him by one run.
Meanwhile, though his team lost the battle against Australia in Perth, the India skipper Virat Kohli is still the world’s best batsman when it comes to the cricket’s most traditional format – Test cricket. Kohli gained 14 points to reach 934 points in ICC Test rankings following his valiant first-innings hundred (123) in the second Test at Perth which Australia won by 146 runs to level the four-match series. Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and pacer Jasprit Bumrah also attained their career-best positions in the latest ICC Test rankings released on Thursday. The India captain has thus increased his lead over New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson from seven to 19 points.
