Australia vs India 3rd Test Melbourne: Debutant Mayank Agarwal joined Sunil Gavaskar to become the fifth opener to hit a fifty in his first innings away from home. Sunil Gavaskar has got the feat in Port of Spain in 1974. The others on the list are SS Naik, MH Mankad, LS Rajput. It was also the first fifty by an Indian opener in the ongoing series, which is a big thing as it seems India has finally got a reliable opener. Mayank gets his opportunity thanks to his consistent performances in the domestic circuit in India. Mayank brought up his 50 in 95 balls. Hanuma Vihari and Mayank Agarwal opened the batting for India, but Vihari was dismissed for eight off 66 balls, but he had seen off the new ball which was critical from India’s point of view.

Mayank is looking good and set to go on and get a hundred as well. The only other time an Indian opener made his Test debut in Australia, before Mayank Agarwal – was Amir Elahi in the 2nd innings at Sydney in Dec 1947. Incidentally, Elahi had gone in at No 10 in the first innings!

He is now the only 2nd Indian make a 50+ on Test debut on Australian soil after Dattu Phadkar (51) at SCG in Dec 1947.
