Indian-origin seamer Gurinder Sandhu has been included in the Australia’s squad for the tri-series against India and England starting on 16th of this month. Fast bowler Kane Richardson has also been drafted in the side.
Both the pacers have been called in as cover for the frontline bowlers Mitchell Johnson, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, who were part of recently concluded Australia’s Test series against India. However, both Sandhu and Richardson are not part of the Australia’s World Cup squad. The seamers will feature in the first part of the tri-series with the trio of Johnson, Hazlewood and Starc likely to return to the squad towards the end.
A Cricket Australia statement read: ‘Given the heavy workloads undertaken by Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood during the fourth Test, and the hamstring problems recently suffered by Perth-based pair Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Marsh, the selectors have named South Australia’s Kane Richardson and New South Wales seamer Gurinder Sandhu as extra bowling options for the early matches of the Tri-Series.’
21-year old, Sandhu, who was born to Indian parents in Australia, plays for Sydney Thunders team in the Big Bash League. The bowler has been doing well in Australian domestic circuit and has already featured in Australia’s Under-19 squad.
