Rio de Janeiro, Aug 18: India’s Babita Kumari competed against Greek female wrestler Maria Pervolaraki in women’s 53 kg freestyle event at Rio Olympics 2016. Indian contingent was optimistic about her performance, especially after wrestler Sakshi Malik secured the bronze medal on Wednesday, competing in the women’s 68 kg freestyle event. However, Babita Kumari failed to live up to the expectations. Babita Kumari has crashed out of Rio Olympics 2016. In her match against Maria Pervolaraki, she lost by 1:5. Pervolaraki completely outmatched Babita Kumari, keeping her on the defence for most part of the game. Babita could not succeed in coming back into the game, and for the most part of the game, she was kept grounded by Pervolaraki. Babita Kumari hails from Bhiwani region of Haryana. She was part of the Indian contingent at London Olympics 2012. She shot to fame after winning the gold medal at 2014 Commonwealth Games. Her cousin sister Vinesh Phogat crashed out of Rio Olympics 2016 on Wednesday when she suffered a mid-match injury during her Round of 16 bout in 48 kg freestyle event. With her loss, another medal hope for India has diminished. All eyes are set on PV Sindhu, who would compete in the semi-final today in Men’s Single Badminton. Babita Kumari had suffered from viral fever in Rio, which casted a severe doubt over her performance. In the match today, one could see that Babita looked rustic and was not in the flare in which her fans had seen her performing at 2014 Commonwealth Games, where she bagged the gold prize.
