Lakshya Sen created history as he went on to beat World No 1 K.Vitidsarn 21-19,21-18. It was a comprehensive victory for the 16-year-old from Almora. Sen was the sixth-seed in the tournament. The Indian sixth seed registered an easy victory in 46 minutes over Thai top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the Under-19 final.
Earlier, Lakshya Sen beat Indonesian Ikhsan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay 21-7, 21-14 to make it to the finals. In the process, he also ensured a medal. The Indian has been having a dream run, where he thrashed second-seed Li Shifeng in the quarter-finals.
The rising Indian shuttler had won a bronze medal in the 2016 Asian Junior Championship, will look to acquire the top spot on the podium, this time.
With this emphatic win, Lakshya became only the third Indian after Gautam Thakkar (1965) and P.V. Sindhu (2012) to pocket a gold medal at the Asia Junior Championships.
The Indian shuttlers who have won a medal at the Championship include Gautam Thakkar (Gold) in 1965, Pranav Chopra/Prajkta Sawant (Bronze) in 2009, Sameer Verma (Silver) and P.V. Sindhu (Bronze) in 2011, P.V. Sindhu (Gold) and Sameer Verma (Bronze) in 2012.
