The Ballon d’Or could see a new recipient for the first time in a decade, as the current voting of the award suggests. According to a French journalist, neither Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi is in the top three, after submission of half of the votes.

Ballon d’Or is the most coveted and anticipated individual award in football, the trophy is awarded to the best footballer in the world. Some of the game’s most elite names have won the award including the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Brazilian Ronaldo, Kaka among others.
The 30-man shortlist of the nominees of for the Ballon d’Or 2018 includes the names of some of the best performers of the past 365 days.

The shortlist includes the names of Sergio Aguero, Gareth Bale, Edinson Cavani, Karim Benzema, Kevin De Bruyne, Allison Becker, Diego Godin, Ivan Rakitic, Roberto Firmino, Antoine Griezmann, Thibaut Courtois, Isco, Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe, Rafael Varane, Luka Modric, N’Golo Kante, Neymar, Paul Pogba, Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Ramos, Mohamed Salah, Jan Oblak, Raphael Varane, Sadio Mane, Luis Suarez, Marcelo, Hugo Lloris, Mario Mandzukic, Harry Kane.

Notably, most of the nominees are forwards.

According to Eric Mamruth, the top three names this year so far includes World Cup finalist Luka Modric, World Cup winner Raphael Varane and his compatriot and teen sensation Kylian Mbappe.

Should one of these three win the award, it would be the first time in the last decade that the top three would be without the joint record-five time holders Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
