The two sides – Bangladesh and South Africa – came into the Test series at the back of a 2-1 win for the hosts. It was Bangladesh’s third consecutive ODI win this series. They have been unbeaten in bilateral ODI series this year. In the world cup too, they managed to upset England and qualify through to the quarter-finals where they lost to India.

However, their Test performance hasn’t been upto the mark. Even as they have played superbly, they are yet to register a Test win this year. The two-match series against Pakistan ended with them losing 0-1. The one-off Test match against India ended in a draw as it was marred by rain.

Against South Africa, in this Test, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. Bangladesh bowlerd them out for 256 and took a crucial 76 runs lead. South African openers Dean Elgar and Stiaan van Zyl put on an unbeaten stand of 61 runs for the first wicket when stumps was taken on Day Three.
