Barcelona Announce Hansi Flick As Xavi Hernandez’s Successor, German Pens Contract Till 2026

Hansi Flick is admired by Barcelona president Joan Laporta and was initially tipped to replace Ronald Koeman in 2021.

Barcelona: Barcelona have announced the appointment of former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Hansi Flick on a two-year contract on Wednesday. The 59-year-old is set to start his new era with the Catalan giants after club legend Xavi Hernandez was sacked last week.

“Barcelona and Hansi Flick have reached an agreement for the German to become men’s first team football coach until 30 June 2026. The new coach has signed a contract at the Club’s offices accompanied by FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta; first vice president responsible for the sporting area, Rafa Yuste and the Club’s sporting director, Anderson Luís de Souza, Deco,” Barcelona said in a statement.

The club has been impressed with his style of play and the the success in brought to his previous teams. In its statement it said, “By bringing Hansi Flick as coach, FC Barcelona have chosen a man well known for his teams’ high pressing, intense and daring style of play which has brought him great success at club level and international level, winning pretty much all there is to win in the world of football.”

Blaugrana Striker, Robert Lewandowski will be reunited with his former manager at the club. Lewandowski was under Flick at Bayern Munich, where they together won all trophies that were available and in the 2020/21 season Lewandowski averaged more than one goal per game.

Barcelona President, Joan Laporta has longa admired Hansi Flick and was looked as the ideal candidate to replace Ronald Koeman in 2021 but his commitment with German national team was the problem.

The club reportedly started to negotiate with the German after Xavi announced in January that he will leave the club at the end of the season. Although in April, Barca announced that Xavi will continue as the manager next season but after his comments regarding the club’s financial condition resulted in a sack.
