East Bengal, who had won the competition last season for a record 39th time and eighth on the trot since 2010, struggled to finish up front as Peerless took the lead through Ansumana Kromah (6′).
East Bengal finally found the equaliser in the 72nd minute from Kassim Aidara but their joy was short-lived with Naro Hair Shrestha putting Peerless in front yet again in the space of six minutes.
