The fourth round of the Capital One Cup 2014-15 concluded with wins for Liverpool, Chelsea but defending champions Manchester City were stunned by Newcastle United in front of their own fans at the Etihad stadium on Wednesday night. Goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko ensured the Magpies trumped the Citizens 2-0 and thus ease the pressure off manager Alan Pardew.
On Tuesday night, Brendan Rodgers’ Reds managed to overturn a one-goal deficit to trump Swansea City 2-1 at Anfield courtesy of goals from Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren. Championship side Bournemouth stunned West Bromwich Albion by the same scoreline at Dean Court courtesy of goals from Eunan O’Kane and Callum Wilson. MK Dons, who had stunned Manchester United 4-0 in the second round, faltered to fellow League One outfit Sheffield United. Benik Afobe’s penalty put them in the lead but Michael Higdon’s late brace ensured Nigel Clough’s side progressed into the last eight.
Chelsea too secured their place in the quarterfinal with a 2-1 win against League Two’s Shrewsbury Town. Didier Drogba opened the scoring the second-half but Andy Mangan equalised in the 77th minute and hoped the Shropshire club could pull off a giant killing act. However, an own goal from Jermaine Grandison ensured the game wouldn’t go into extra time; enabling Jose Mourinho’s boys return to west London with relatively fresher legs.
Derby County travelled to Craven Cottage and managed to pull off a 5-2 win despite trailing 2-0 down. Two goals from Moussa Dembele appeared to have given Kit Symons’ side a comfortable lead but Chris Martin halved the deficit in first-half injury time. From the second half, the visitors were on song as Simon Dawkins netted a brace adding to goals from Johnny Russell and Jeff Hendrick.
Southampton have performed exceptionally well under Ronald Koeman this season and the players ensured they replicate their achievements in the Barclays Premier League to the Capital One Cup as well. Having registered a narrow 1-0 victory over Stoke City in the league last Saturday, the Saints dumped the Potters out of the competition with a hard-fought 3-2 victory at the Britannia Stadium. Graziano Pelle’s double coupled with Shane Long’s 30th minute strike cancelled out Steven N’Zonzi and Mame Biram Diouf’s second-half goals.
