
English Premier League leaders Chelsea have been drawn against Liverpool in the semifinals of the Capital One Cup while Tottenham Hotspur face Sheffield United in the other clash. Nigel Clough’s side, the sole representative from League One, have already registered two wins over top flight outfit in the competition. Before narrowly defeating Southampton in the previous round, the Blades stunned West Ham United 5-4 after a penalty shootout in round two.
The semi-final which is a two-legged affair will be played after the turn of the year with the first leg scheduled for the week commencing January 19 and second leg ties taking place in the week beginning January 26. Liverpool and Chelsea both overcame Championship outfits Bournemouth and Derby County respectively by the same scoreline (3-1). The two Premier League giants have history in the competition with the Merseyside club not sharing a pleasant experience. In the last meeting between the duo, the Reds registered a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in the fifth round in 2011-12 season, en route to lifting the title at Wembley.
Covering up for his lacklustre finishing over Manchester United, Raheem Sterling netted a brace and Lazar Markovic netted his first for his new club before Dan Gosling pegged one back for Bournemouth at the Dean Court on Wednesday night. For Chelsea, Eden Hazard, Filipe Luis and Andre Schurrle produced the goals to secure the Blues’ passage into the last four.
Meanwhile, Tottenham, the only team taking on fellow EPL club in the quarterfinal thrashed Newcastle United at White Hart Lane. Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado added to Nabil Bentaleb’s first-half strike to condemn the Magpies to a 4-0 defeat on Wednesday night. Sheffield United needed a solitary goal from Marc McNulty in the 63rd minute to pile more pressure on Ronald Koeman’s Southampton.
