Chennai Super Kings managed to score a decent total of 157 after Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper won the toss and invited them to bat first. Some quick batting by MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo in the death overs propelled the score from an average total to a good score as the Super Kings were suffering at a point when they were 86/4.
Chennai got off to a flying start as Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum started in a tremendous fashion hitting the opening bowlers of the Knight Riders at almost 9 runs an over. The two openers dominated the pace bowlers of Kolkata and it looked like both of them will run along with the proceedings, the way things were going. It was at this point that Gautam Gambhir introduced spin into the attack and things changed for the Knight Riders.
Gambhir brought Piyush Chawla into the attack in the fourth over and even though he was hit for a couple of boundaries in the first part of the over, he picked up the wicket of Dwayne Smith and gave instant result to his captain. Just under three overs after this dismissal, Brendon McCullum too departed as he was caught in the front on the bowling of Yusuf Pathan giving the Knight Riders their second wicket of the innings.
Suresh Raina and Faf Du Plessis tried to steady the ship ship after that and they were pretty successful at doing that as they added 35 runs for the third wicket at quick pace. But once again the spinners did the trick for the Knightriders as Piyush Chawla and Sunil Narine picked up both the batsmen in consecutive over. While Narine had Raina LBW at the score of 28, Chawla had Du Plessis stumped on 14.
It was due to MS Dhoni (35) and Dwayne Bravo (28) that the Chennai Super Kings recovered from 86/4 and posted a total of 157 as both the players played sensationally in the last couple of overs and made sure that their bowlers will have a decent total to defend on a wicket that has good carry and pace.
Dwayne Bravo massacred Pat Cummins for 21 runs in the 17th over and gave hopes of a big ending for the Chennai Super Kings. But Sunil Narine brought everything back to normal for the Knight Riders as henjust gave away two runs in the 18th over. Pat Cummins once again went for plenty in the 19th over giving away 12 runs in that over. The last over bowled by Umesh Yadav, who went for some runs the entire innings, again went for 12 runs as the Super Kings posted a score in excess of 150.
