Premier League champions Chelsea on Wednesday agreed a deal in principle with Real Madrid to sign the Spain forward Alvaro Morata for a club record fee.

He is the Premier League champions’ fourth signing of the summer after Tiemoue Bakayoko, Willy Caballero and Antonio Rudiger.

Discussions were under way with Real Madrid since Chelsea lost out on forward, Romelu Lukaku, to Manchester United. The fee for Morata is expected to be around £70m, eclipsing the £50m paid to Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011, with only small details still to be ironed out between the clubs.

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea arrived in Beijing on Wednesday morning for a three-game tour, signed a new two-year contract on Tuesday which has established him as the highest-paid head coach in Chelsea’s history at around £9.6m-a-season.

Morata scored 15 goals in 26 appearances in La Liga last season for Real Madrid.
