Gold Coast, April 5: Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 196 kg in the Women’s 48 kg weightlifting category to help India earn its first medal. She rose over the women from Sri Lanka and Mauritius, who finished in the third and second spot respectively to earn the top podium spot. India now have pocketed one gold and one silver in the weightlifting.

Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa won silver by lifting 166 kg (76 kg in snatch and 96 kg in clean and jerk).

Mirabai surpassed her own personal record. The Manipuri weightlifter lifted 86 kg in Snatch category, surpassing her personal best of 85 kg which was followed by  109 kg clean and jerk record to lift 110kg in the category.

Her total lift of 196 kg delivered India’s first gold on the first day of the Commonwealth Games 2018 in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting category. The Indian, stood to the expectations and broke her own record in all the 4 attempts with ease.

Earlier, weightlifter Gururaja Poojary won a silver medal in the 56 kg event. Malaysia’s Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad got gold with a record total of 261kg. Later in the day, Raja Muthupandi, another Indian weightlifter, will be competing in the men’s 62 kg category.
