After comprehensively losing the ‘biggest fight of his career’ – former two-division UFC champion Cono McGregor wants another crack current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
On Saturday at UFC 229, Khabib (27-0 MMA) gave McGregor (21-4 MMA) a beating of his life and arguably the most brutal loss of his mixed martial arts career. Also known as ‘The Eagle’, Khabib was able to frustrate the Irish star with his wrestling skills for the majority of the opening three rounds and even dropped McGregor with a right hand in round two.
The Irishman posted an image of himself on his official Twitter handle, with a blackened eye, leaning on a railing with a drink in hand.
He wrote: “We lost the match but won the battle. The war goes on.”
McGregor’s tweet hasn’t gone down well with the UFC fans and Khabib supporters who bashed the MMA legend for once again playing a loud mouth. Here are some of the reactions after Conor’s tweet:-
In the fourth round, the Dagestan native forced McGregor to submit with a rear-naked choke midway at the buzzing T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Khabib then proceeded to vault the cage and attack a member of McGregor’s entourage on the outside sparking a melee in the arena.
Meanwhile, McGregor was attacked inside the octagon by two members of Nurmagomedov’s team.
Earlier, the 30-year old Irish had also requested for a rematch with the Russian fighter.
“Good knock. Looking forward to the rematch,” he tweeted in the immediate aftermath on Sunday morning.
Khabib’s post-fight actions might land him in hot water and while McGregor dropped charges against the Russian, the Nevada State Athletic Commission could still come down hard on the champion. He is yet to receive any of his fight purse and could be stripped of the title while UFC president Dana White has hinted at “four to six-month suspension” from the sport.
