Right-arm pacer Suranga Lakmal has been appointed as the Sri Lanka skipper for the third and final Test against the West Indies that gets underway in Barbados late Saturday — with a pink ball and under lights. This development comes after International Cricket Council (ICC) appointed Judicial Commissioner, Michael Beloff, rejected regular skipper Dinesh Chandimal’ appeal against the ball-tampering sanction and upheld the one-Test ban.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Suranga Lakmal to captain the third Test against West Indies, which will start Saturday. Lakmal was appointed as the captain, in the absence of Dinesh Chandimal,” a statement from the board read.

It is reported that veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath was also among the choices to lead the team but SLC revealed on Friday that he split the webbing between his ring and small fingers of his non-bowling hand during training on Thursday and was a doubtful starter for the day-night Test.
Rangana Herath, who is touring West Indies with the national team is injured and is doubtful for the 3rd test match.

Chandimal was suspended from the third Test after he was found guilty of changing the condition of the ball during the second day’s play of the second Test, which concluded at Gros Islet on Monday.
During a hearing held at the end of the St Lucia Test, Chandimal had admitted putting something in his mouth but wasn’t able to recall what it was. Javagal Srinath, the ICC match referee, had handed Chandimal the maximum punishment available under the code, i.e. two suspension points and a fine of 100 per cent of his match fee. However, the Sri Lanka captain had appealed against the suspension given by Srinath.
ICC Judicial Commissioner Michael Beloff QC dismissed Chandimal’s appeal after a four-hour hearing on Friday during which both parties were represented by legal counsel.“The original decision of the ICC match referee Javagal Srinath, handing Chandimal the maximum punishment available under the code, i.e. two suspension points and a fine of 100 percent of his match fee, will stand,” ICC said in a statement.
Chandimal faces a lengthy ban after having admitted to the more serious Level three offence which relates to ‘conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.’ He, along with head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and Manager Asanka Gurusinha, admitted the offence after Sri Lanka held up play for two hours on the third day of the second Test in St. Lucia after the umpires alleged that Chandimal had tampered with the ball.
The Windies are currently leading 1-0 in the three-Test series having won the first Test at Port of Spain and then drawing the second game at St. Lucia.
