Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of raping an American woman, a German magazine has published. According to German magazine Der Spiegel, the rape allegedly took place in June 2009 in a hotel room in Las Vegas.
According to news.com.au, Ronaldo has vehemently denied these claims and said that the sex was consensual. He is also set to sue the magazine for publishing “blatantly illegal” claims made by the woman.
Ronaldo’s lawyer Christian Schertz said in a statement the report was “an inadmissible reporting of suspicions in the area of privacy”, and that he would seek legal redress for his client from the magazine.
The star striker was said to have paid her more than USD 500,000 (£287,000) to ensure she would not speak about the allegations — but her lawyer is now challenging the alleged agreement. The woman has claimed that Ronaldo raped her anally, but star footballer says the sex was consensual.
According to Leslie Mark Stovall, the lawyer for the alleged victim, Kathryn Mayorga, Ronaldo and Mayorga then reached an out-of-court agreement, according to Stovall as reported in the magazine.
Meanwhile, the magazine’s deputy editor-in-chief, Alfred Weinzierl, told Reuters Der Spiegel had repeatedly written to Ronaldo’s management and lawyers about the allegations before publishing.
Ronaldo, who is one of the biggest names in world sport, has been named player of the year five times and transferred to Juventus from Real Madrid this summer for 100 million euros.
