A great display of archery took India’s one of the leading archers Deepika Kumari to the Round of 16 of Rio Olympics 2016. Deepika first defeated Georgia’s Kristine Esebua in a neck to neck fight in Round of 64 and qualified to Round of 32, where it was Italy’s Guendalina Sartori over whom the athlete registered a dominant victory to book her place in Round of 16. Deepika started off confidently with a 9,9,9 in the first set and won it 27-26 against Kristine. In the next round, The Georgia athlete matched up to her, registering a 27 similar to her opponent. The next set saw sheer brilliance from Deepika as she aimed a hat-trick of 10s while it was three 9s for her competitor. Making the competition more interesting, Kristine came back into the game with a 29-27 in the next set. With a draw in the last set for 10,10,9, Deepika confirmed her entry to the next round. Though the start against Sartori looked pretty weak compared to her performance against Kristine as she lost the opener of the Round of 32 by 27-24, Deepika did not waste time and made a quick comeback with the next set, winning it 29-26 with a 10,10,9. From there on, the athlete looked unstoppable as she won the next 28-26, gaining a lead of 4-2 which she increased to 6-2 in the fourth set, winning the set 28-17 with an 8,10,10 and won the math 6-2 to get to the Round of 16.
Earlier, Bombayla Devi had qualified to the Round of 16, defeating Laurence Baldauff of Austria in Round of 64 and Shih-Chia Lin of Taipei in Round of 32.
Deepika Kumari will next face Taipei’s Ya-Ting Tan while Bombayla Devi is set to compete against Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia to earn their tickets to the quarter-finals. Atanu das, who qualified in men’s individual archery, was seen at the arena supporting his fellow contenders.
