East Bengal and Mohun Bagan play out a goalless draw as Kolkata Derby ends in a tie. Oldest football club of India, Mohun Bagan was the more dominating side in the match but couldn’t produce a goal in the allotted 90 minutes.

The match was as expected, full of action and emotions. First half was dominated by Mohun Bagan and they made many attacks but failed to capitalise on that. On the other hand, East Bengal was more focused on keeping the possession. The first half ended goal-less as neither of the teams opened the scoresheet.

Second half was a no different story and this time it was East Bengal who came out attacking and made the pressure on Mohun Bagan by producing numerous attacks. However, just like their opposition, East Bengal also failed to capitalise on those chances. Mohun Bagan then once again switched to their pressing game to take hold of the game in the dying minutes. However, even after coming close to scoring many a time, they couldn’t find the back of the net.

The game was physical and was stopped many times by the referee because of the players going down and their injuries concern. We also witnessed some brawls between players during the game, which are not shocking to see considering that it’s the Kolkata Derby.

Talking about the I –League then Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have faced each other for total 31 times till now. The last time both the teams came face to face was in April 2016 and it was East Bengal who defeated Mohun Bagan as the final score read 2-1. Talking about the points table of the current season then, East Bengal is leading the charts with 19 points from eight matches, while Mohun Bagan have registered 16 points from seven games. Aizawl FC and Shillong Lajong FC are at third and fourth position respectively.

The next match of the tournament will take place on 14th February and that will also mark the beginning of round nine of I-league. The match will be played between Chennai City vs Churchill Bro and will take place at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium.
