Cometh the hour, cometh the man!
England captain Harry Kane’s brace against Tunisia proved to be the difference in the Group G match. Kane’s late goal in extra time edged out Tunisia, who put up a strong fight nevertheless. England now join Belgium at the top of the table in Group G. The English skipper broke the deadlock in the 11th-minute and then it was his winner that sealed the deal for England. This is England’s first victory in FIFA World Cup since their win against Slovenia in 2010. That seemed distant even before the start of the game and this victory was highly needed for the Lions.
England was 1-0 up, but the African side showed character to come back to level terms in the 35th-minute, thanks to Ferjani Sassi. In the second half, England pressed hard and were playing aggressive football looking for goals, but it was not happening and one started farming thoughts if it was not going to be their night. But Kane had different ideas.
This victory should settle the nerves in the English camp, which is great for the rest of the campaign. The emotional English captain could not keep a lid over his emotions and took to Twitter to express himself after the brace. His post read, “What a feeling to score a winner for @England at the @FIFAWorldCup. Loved it! No less than we deserved. #ThreeLions #ENG #WorldCup.”
Meanwhile, England will now play their upcoming fixtures against Panama and Belgium. Belgium would be the big one for the Lions.
