England registered a compressive nine-wicket win over South Africa in the first T20I at The Rose Bowl. Chasing 143, England achieved the target in 14.3 overs with nine wickets in hand. Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales put on an unbeaten 98-run stand for the second wicket to help their side take an early lead in the three-match series. Apparently, both Bairstow and Hales finished unbeaten on 60 and 47.
Opting to bat first, South Africa were off to a disastrous start. The visitors lost the wicket of opener JJ Smuts in the first over who was removed by David Willey for a duck. In next over, Mark Wood accounted for another opener Reeza Hendricks (3). Also Check- ENG vs SA 1st T20I Full Scorecard
England further dented South Africa when in the fifth over Wood dismissed David Miller (9) with the score reading 32 for three.
However, after losing three quick wickets, AB de Villiers and Farhaan Behardien added impressive 110 runs for the fourth wicket. The duo made sure South African bowlers have something to defend. Jason Roy and Hales then helped England get off to a quick start. Roy, who has been out of form, scored 28 off 14 balls before Andile Phehlukwayo trapped him leg before wickets. Roy hit three fours and couple of sixes during his stay.
Hales along with Bairstow then took the game away from South Africa and stitched a match-winning partnership.
With this win, hosts England take a 1-0 lead in the series. The second T20I between these two sides will be played Taunton on June 23.
