Sky Sports and BT Sport, the current rights holder of English Premier League, could soon face competition from online streaming and social networking sites like Amazon, Facebook or Twitter. According to The Times, these sites could bid for the broadcasting of Premier League matches live.

Sky and BT’s three-season deal which started in 2015 will end in 2018 and Premier League chief Richard Scudamore believes that the battle for gaining rights will intensify with big online media players jumping in. Also Read- Real Madrid Beat Manchester United 2-1 to Win Their Fourth UEFA Super Cup Title

“We envisage anybody being able to come along and bid for those rights. We would need some distribution criteria and to make sure it was readily available across platforms,” Daily Star UK quoted Mr Scudamore as saying.

In April Amazon paid £38million for ten NFL American football games and thus their investment in one of the best football leagues can not be ruled out. Back then Amazon’s senior vice-president Jeff Blackburn had said that the deal was “about starting to bring live sports to Prime members around the world,” hinting at further investments. Also Read- Barcelona Close in on Signing of Philippe Coutinho From Liverpool: Report

“Nobody’s sitting here thinking that we’re going to eradicate every single abuse, any more than suddenly everybody’s going to stop speeding on a motorway,” Mr Scudamore was quoted as saying by The Sun.

“But the truth is we are governing the situation and managing the situation down to acceptable levels. Young people are more than prepared to pay for things. My own children are more than happy going online and buying things. It’s about creating content and genres and ways and means of reaching them,” he added.
