The match was set up like it was going to be an exhilarating tribute to how things can get if two big English Premier League (EPL) teams face off against each other, but it ended on a whimper in the end. Manchester City started out guns blazing through a blazing Sergio Aguero strike in the 8th minute. 2 minutes later came the equaliser from Arsenal, who scored through a soft corner, Olivier Giroud got a free header in the box. The second half saw two outstanding goals; Kevin de Bruyne bulleted a stunning solo goal. Some slick one-touch passing got the Gunners the equaliser. Alexis Sanchez netted it. Danny Welbeck limped off early into the match, handing a start to Jack Wilshire.
The match started off with terrific intensity but couldn’t be matches as the match progressed. The two teams were playing cautiously from the start but it was a sudden break and a thunderous shot that broke Arsenal’s resolve. Fernandinho held off his man and slipped a ball to Aguero and the Argentinian took a few steps before belting a shot past Petr Cech. The Gunners were shocked but came back well in the game. Only a minute later Elneny’s corner found Giroud unmarked in the centre and the Frenchman headed the equaliser; it felt like an eternity since the Frenchman scored.
City kept the intensity high though in the first half and there was plenty of goalmouth action from the Sky Blues. A lobbed ball from the right found Aguero, who had done extremely well to fend off Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal. Quite unexpectedly, Petr Cech had come off his line and was caught in no man’s land as the City striker had the ball. The attacked fizzled out as the ball was cleared out by the defense.
One of the main talking points of the half turned out to be Danny Welbeck limping off after twisting his leg, lunging into the path of Bacary Sagna, who had the ball. From the looks of it, Welbeck Euro 2016 dream, and with it, the season might have come to a sad end. One couldn’t keep Aguero out of action though. Fernandinho stole the ball on the left and got to the byline and cut the ball back to the waiting Aguero, who shot over the bar through a deflection; it was going over.
The second half started with De Bruyne scoring a sumptuous goal to tilt the tide back in City’s favour again. The run of the Belgian started from just inside the Arsenal half and he took a couple of players with him, cut inside and shot the ball into the net from just outside the area. It was well worthy of a match winner but Arsenal showed their class 15 minutes later. It was goal out of nowhere. From one end to the other, there were only four touches as the ball found it’s way past Joe Hart. The finish from Alexis Sanchez was brilliant but the touches that led to the goal were equally crucial. The Gunners were back. There were a couple of chances too. Theo Walcott suddenly found himself in the box but skewed the shot wide of the left post.
It was uncertain whether Arsene Wenger was happy with the point or go for the win through the substitution of Francis Coquelin. Arsenal’s midfield was chasing shadows for much of the game and in the dying minutes of the game, a cross was floated in from the right was met with a cracker of a volley. It didn’t even look like he had positioned himself well but the Ivorian’s shot cannoned off the bar. City got a couple of yellow cards in stoppage time; Fernandimho and Nicolas Otamendi made cynical challenges. The clock ran out as it was the home side who held on.
