With two games spread out over three days, the English Premier League (EPL) saw footballing standards slip but the battle for the top four spots still remained undecided. Arsenal slipped up against Stoke City, going through a rare match without scoring a goal. Newcastle United’s fight to stay in the league got a huge shot in the arm as Ayoze Perez’s last minute winner at White Hart Lane earned them a win. Tottenham Hotspur looked poised to hold on to their top spot but lost ground in the last 15 minutes, when their opponents scored a couple of goals.

With the loss, Maurucio Pochettino’s side saw their fourth spot being snatched away by Manchester United, who were the biggest victors over the weekend. Both sides looked lacklustre and the game was heading for a tame 0-0 draw. Two former Evertonians, Wayne Rooney and Maraoune Fellaini combined together and completed a fourth straight win for Louis van Gaal against United’s arch rivals. Aston Villa had their best week of the season. In a battle which had two teams with contrasting ambitions, Aston Villa defied the odds to get a point from Leicester City.

Bournemouth got their biggest win of their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 win against Norwich City. Manchester City were in the hunt in the title race, thwarting Crystal Palace 3-0 as Alan Pardrew’s side continued their bad run that started against Chelsea. Everton have been stunning in recent times, nicking points of top teams. Last week, they denied City at Etihad. Here, they all set to take three points against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. However, John Terry’s controversial equaliser in the last minute of stoppage time denied them in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
