France and Romania face off in the first match of Euro 2016 and it was a match that lived up to its hype. For quite a few spells in the game, it looked like the hosts’ opening woes would continue but Dimitri Payet came in and showed why he was chosen ahead of the highly rated Manchester United forward, Anthony Martial. Romania were no pushovers during the game and pushed hard. There were a couple of close opportunities too and it was the Men in Yellow who threatened in the first half. Bogdan Stancu shot from close range and Hugo Lloris made an excellent save. There were more attacks and France left space between the lines; a better opponent would have made them pay. The centre back pairing of Adil Rami and Laurent Koscielny also had little coordination between them and look like they always had a mistake in them. France settled down later in the half and chances were coming thick and fast. Antoine Griezmann, earmarked as one of the teams of the tournament latched on to an inch-perfect cross from Paul Pogba and took a first time shot; the ball bounced off the Romanian defenders and the ball lobbed up in the air. The Atletico Madrid winger thumped the ball into the post. Payet though, was relentless. He continued to find pockets of space and spend more time on the ball when some of his other teammates were struggling to create an impact. He crossed from the right during the second half and Olivier Giroud, attacked the ball and beat the goalkeeper’s run to head the ball into the net. It was error on judgement from the Romanian Cristian Tatarusanu, who rushed out of lines when there was little need for it. The goal was a big monkey off Giroud’s back, after coming in for a torrent of criticism from the press and pundits. He had not done enough to salvage his reputation here either; there were atleast three missed opportunities. Patrice Evra got away in the first half but couldn’t get away in the second when he made a clumsy shoulder-barge on Bogdan Stancu, who made a meal of the challenge but smarted up to step up and score. The match was heading for a draw and Romanians were closing down spaces well. That was when Payet showed what he can do with his feet — both of them when he gets even an inch of space.
