England looked like winning the first match of the European Championships for the first time in history. England probably deserved the win as the attacking quartet of Kane, Raheem Sterling, Wayne Rooney, and Delle Alli looked full of verve and rhythm and pressed well in midfield. In the first half, the midfield won the ball well and the Russian back-four were constantly bombarded with attacks from England. England could have had a couple in the first half alone. Kane got into goalscoring positions and Alli found his Tottenham Hotspur teammate with alarming regularity. Dier was terrific in the middle of the park and for the sheer quality of his free-kick, a slap over the Russian wall, England should have had the win. Rooney was quality too and if not for Akinfeev’s out-of-the-world save, he could have had the winner too. It was not to be for England and it is a lesson learnt in the most cruel fashion that one can’t afford to go to sleep in this game. Berezutski was the ultimate winner.
