In a shocking outcome in the Fed Cup semifinal, Belarus defeated their higher rated opponent Swaziland on Sunday.
Aryna Sabalenka, ranked 125, gave Belarus a 3-1 lead in the best of five matches as she beat Viktoria 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The Swiss won the dead rubber. The empathic victory of Belarus set up a final against the United States in November, when Belarus will enjoy the service of No. 1-ranked women player Victoria Azarenka.
The two-time Australian Open champion is about to return to the Fed Cup squad in July after giving birth to his first child. Sasnovich surprising everyone surpassed Golubic’s challenge beating her 6-3, 5-7 and 7-5 on Saturday and then Timea Bacsinszky 6-2, 7-6 (2) went down against him in Sunday’s first rubber.
All three opponents, whom were defeated by Belarus players, were almost 40 places higher than Belarus players.
The Swiss finally managed to win two rubbers as Bacsinszky defeated Sabalenka 6-4, 7-5, and Martina Hingis registered an empathic victory against Belinda Bencic 6-0, 6-1 defeat. But, Belarus edged them one more victory than Switzerland. Also read: Maria Sharapova to learn French Open fate on May 15
Meanwhile, Azarenka watched this weekend’s match from the stand and joined the celebration of Belarusian team. But she suffered an accidental kick to the face from Sabalenka as the 18-year-old was hoisted aloft by her teammates. Azarenka seemed surprised but reacted with good cheer.
“It’s okay,” she wrote on Twitter, commenting on footage of the incident. “See you in the final!”
