New Delhi: India under-17 football team coach Luis Norton de Matos is proud of his team after India played a thriller against Colombia of the Under-17 World Cup match on Monday. Despite losing 2-1, de Matos swelled with pride after the match.
Speaking to media persons after the match, the head coach said that his team showed potential against the likes of Colombia and Ghana.
“I am very proud to be at this level of competition. We have showed that this team can play well against a South American team. I am frustrated because today I had a feeling that we could have made a draw. All teams are difficult to play us, all coaches have said that, both US and Colombia coaches. We need more consistency in the final third”, he said.
Highlighting the need to work on set-pieces, the coach said, “We are strong in our organisation. We have lot of concentration. Its difficult to score a goal against us. In corners and set pieces, we have been working more on that. We had good possibilities to score but sadly couldn’t convert them.”
He added that the one-month coaching stint of the Indian keepers with a world-class goalkeeping coach prior to the tournament showed the progress of the stoppers.
de Matos rued the missed opportunities by his team. “Yes. Of course. If we score a goal first, we had a big chance to win the game. The first minute after the goal was harsh. The players were little bit lost after the goals”, he said.
“This team has a fantastic future”, he ended with a thunderous applause from the audience.
