Hierro took charge of La Roja at the start of the World Cup tourney, replacing Julen Lopetegui, who was fired by the federation for having signed to manage Real Madrid.
Asked whether he would remain as coach, Hierro said: “It’s not my decision.”
“We came here to do something important, to fight for a World Cup. And this (losing in the knockout stage) was not the plan,” he told Spain’s Telecinco. “I have no reproach whatsoever for this group of players.”
“As coach, I am self-critical. If someone is looking to lay blame, I offer my head,” Hierro said.
Hierro said that his players did everything they could in the match against Russia, which went to penalty kicks when the sides ended more than 120 minutes of action deadlocked 1-1.
“It’s very difficult to be attacking, attacking, attacking … for 120 minutes,” he said. “The commitment has been total.”
