Argentina lost 4-3 to France and are knocked out of the on-going FIFA World Cup 2018.
Earlier, Argentina beat Nigeria 2-1 to get their campaign in order after a tame 1-1 draw to Iceland, but what caught the attention during the Argentina victory was former Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s antics. Maradona was also caught by shutterbugs handing something off in front of his VIP box before pointing to the crowd and then pointing to his chest. He was running high-on-emotions just after Lionel Messi broke the deadlock with a right-foot shot.
The World Cup-winning legend hit the headlines earlier this week after needing emergency medical treatment at the end of Argentina’s dramatic late win over Nigeria. He almost collapsed while the medical staff were taking him to a secluded place to treat him. He had to be attended by on-field medical staff who apparently advised him to leave the ground, but he refused. He was also seem making gestures with his middle finger.
Here is the small 5-second clip posted by Twitter user Ronan, where you can see Maradona passing something from the VIP box.
The former Argentine captain, earning £10,000 per game at the World Cup as a Fifa ambassador, even offered an £8,000 reward to help find the man behind the death hoax.
The legend was banned for 15 months during his time at Napoli because of cocaine and was later banned from the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for ephedrine. So, he is no stranger to drugs.
Earlier, Maradona was accused of making racist gestures towards South Korean fans and then showing the middle-finger to the Nigerian fans once Messi broke the deadlock.
