Manchester United completed their first doubles league over city rivals Manchester City since 2009-10 season as they won 2-0 on Sunday. Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay were on target for United at Old Trafford keeping their hopes of Champions League spot alive.

A delicious ball from Bruno Fernandes allowed Anthony Martial to fire Red Devils into the lead half-an-hour after the kickoff. Three minutes into the second half, Sergio Aguero found the back of the net drawing level for Manchester City only for VAR to rule it out due to an offside offense.

City suffered in the absence of their injured talisman Kevin de Bruyne with United growing in confidence as the game progressed. Ederson was guilty of committing mistakes that led to both the United goals.

The worse mistake came in the injury time when Ederson’s wayward throw fell straight to McTominay who made no mistake curling in from 30 yards into the net.

The win took United to 45 points and at fifth spot as they are now just three points behind Chelsea at fourth. However, a fifth place finish could be enough for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to qualify for Champions League as City have been banned from European football for two years pending an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The defeat also brought Premier League leaders Liverpool closer to the title as they now need just a maximum of two wins to seal the silverware.

On the other hand, two goals on either side of the half-time took Chelsea to a dominating 4-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge. Mason Mount (14), Pedro (21), Willian (51) and Olivier Giroud (54) were on target for the hosts who recorded their biggest Premier League win since thrashing Huddersfield Town 5-0 in February last year.
