Spanish League leaders Barcelona have completed a loan signing of Kevin Prince Boateng. The transfer will make him the first-ever Ghanian to wear the Barca jersey. This is a move most football fans did not anticipate as the midfielder has not been in a great form in the past few years. However, it is a good chance for the former Sassuolo striker-midfielder to prove his mettle, as if he delivers a positive impact, the Catalan club could avail the option to buy him permanently for 8 million Euros.
This is not the first time in recent times that Barcelona have shifted from their traditional elite signing. The Catalan club signed Paulinho, Arturo Vidal in the recent past; both of them were just about average signings for the club. However, this signing could also be a positive one as Boateng has the ability to play in various midfield positions and also as a striker. With the departure of Munir El Haddadi and the likely transfer of Denis Suarez to Arsenal, Boateng could offer depth and versatility to the squad.
It is interesting to note that Boateng has not been a fan of Barcelona and he prefers their arch-rivals Real Madrid. He has been very vocal about it on social media. In an interview in 2017, Boateng revealed in an interview about his preference between the two Spanish giants: “Madrid, it’s like when I was a kid the White shirt always got me.”
The midfielder also revealed on several occasions about his liking of Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi. Many of his tweets from the past have resurfaced which clearly suggests his Madrid allegiance.
Here is his tweet from 2012 after Andres Iniesta was announced the winner of the European player of the year:
He also took a jibe at Suarez and Busquets, calling them ‘divers’:
Here is a tweet of him wishing Ronaldo the best to go win the Ballon’Dor ahead of Messi:
In the recent 2018-concluded World Cup, he posted a picture of Ronaldo captioned ‘the best’after his sensation hat-trick against Spain:
The Sassuolo player spoke to SkySports after his Barcelona move, “Thanks Sassuolo it’s sad to leave you but Barca is a unique chance. Don’t ask me about Real Madrid, it is just the past. I only want to focus on Barcelona and I hope to score at Bernabeu in the next Clasico.”
He also praised Messi, calling him better than Ronaldo after his move as opposed to what he very openly stated earlier “Cristiano is world class but outside of this world, the best is Messi. Because he’s incredible. He does things that nobody else can do. Because of this, I don’t seem as of this world. Cristiano dominates this world and Messi is ahead of everyone.”
