New Delhi: Following India’s defeat in the second T20 match against South Africa, former Indian cricketer and JioCinema expert Robin Uthappa has openly questioned the Indian team’s strategy. In the match played in Mullanpur, South Africa levelled the series 1-1 with a brilliant all-round performance, while India crumbled under pressure while chasing a large target.
Speaking on the Follow the Blues show, Robin Uthappa said that South Africa made a tremendous comeback after losing the first match. Lungi Ngidi‘s bowling with the new ball disrupted India’s start. A brilliant delivery to Shubman Gill and a challenging length bowled to Abhishek Sharma put Team India on the back foot. In batting, Quinton de Kock adopted an aggressive approach and built a strong partnership with Aiden Markram.
According to Uthappa, the South African batsmen attacked even top bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh right from the start. De Kock’s quick running between the wickets with Dewald Brevis, and later the finishing touches by Donovan Ferreira and David Miller, completely put pressure on India. He said it was an almost perfect match for South Africa.
Robin Uthappa expressed concern about India’s batting strategy. According to him, the team’s plan was not clear after Shubman Gill’s dismissal. Axar Patel should have played the role of a pinch-hitter at that time to score runs quickly and reduce the pressure, but his slow innings hampered the run chase.
Uthappa clearly stated that role clarity is extremely important for batsmen at the international level. Too much flexibility in the initial overs makes scoring runs more complicated. He believes that chasing a big target is not possible without a strong foundation, and expecting players to play multiple roles in a single match can be detrimental to the team.
