Subedar Hardayal Singh (retd), the former Olympic gold medallist, passed away on Friday evening. He was part of the Indian hockey team that won the gold medal in 1956 Summer Olympics at Melbourne. Hardayal Singh had joined the Sikh Regiment in 1949 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion. After retirement, he also coached the Indian hockey team. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Dhyan Chand Award for his lifetime contribution to the game.
