DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) chief and former five-time chief minister M. Karunanidhi passed away at the age of 94 at Kauveri hospital on Tuesday evening. The veteran politician had been in the intensive care unit (ICU) after his blood pressure dropped.

The hospital issued a statement confirming his demise stating “Dr M Karunanidhi passed away at 6.10 PM. Despite the best efforts of our doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond.”

In 1969, Karunanidhi was sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time. He held the position five times in the state. In 2016, the veteran leader retreated from mainstream politics following a drug-induced allergy after which his son M K Stalin took over as the working president of the DMK.

As per official reports, all the government functions and cinema shows in Tamil Nadu that were scheduled on August 7 and August 8 in the state were cancelled. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) issued an order of the closure of all retail shops and bars by 6 pm earlier on Tuesday.
