New Delhi: Delhi Capitals are all set to make a major decision ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026. The team’s captaincy is likely to be handed over to Indian star batter Jemimah Rodrigues. An official announcement from the franchise is expected on Tuesday, December 23.
Delhi Capitals had released former captain Meg Lanning before the WPL 2026 mega auction. Following this, it was almost certain that the team would appoint an Indian player as captain. Jemimah, who was already the team’s vice-captain, emerged as the strongest contender for the role.
Jemimah has been a crucial part of Delhi Capitals’ plans from the beginning. She was the franchise’s first signing in the inaugural WPL auction in 2023. She was also among the first players retained for the new cycle. Shafali Verma, Annabel Sutherland, Marizanne Kapp, and Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Niki Prasad were also among the retained players.
During the WPL 2026 player auction last month, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal had clearly indicated that the team wanted an Indian captain. His statement hinted at Jemimah’s promotion, especially after the team signed South African captain Laura Wolvaardt.
Jemimah Rodrigues recently played a key role in India’s historic World Cup 2025 victory. Her explosive unbeaten century of 127 runs during the record chase of 340 runs against Australia in the semifinal was memorable. In the final, India defeated South Africa to win the title for the first time.
In the WPL, Jemimah has participated in all 27 matches played by Delhi Capitals so far. She has scored 507 runs in 24 innings, with an average of 28.16 and a strike rate of 139.66. These statistics reflect her consistency and importance to the team.
Delhi Capitals were unsuccessful in their attempts to bring Meg Lanning back into the team, and she moved to UP Warriorz. Therefore, Jemimah becoming captain is considered a logical step in the right direction.
