Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will be up against 2021 winners Gujarat Titans in the second Playoffs clash of IPL 2025 – the Eliminator – at the new PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on Friday. Hardik Pandya’s MI are gunning for an unprecedented sixth IPL title but for that they will have to another couple of matches before they can face Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the title.
Both captains — Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya — have something to prove. Gill, recently named India’s Test captain, could enhance his leadership credentials with a deep Playoff run. For Hardik, who has regained fan support after facing jeers last season, an IPL title would further cement his legacy within the franchise.
However, both sides carry concerns into this clash. GT enter the knockout stage short on momentum, having leaked 465 runs in their last two matches. Their bowling has faltered, especially in the powerplay. Mohammed Siraj must strike early, while Arshad Khan’s struggles with the new ball have increased pressure on standout pacer Prasidh Krishna (23 wickets this season). Spin spearhead Rashid Khan has also been ineffective, compounding their woes.
With the bat, Gujarat’s top trio — Sai Sudharsan, Gill, and Jos Buttler — were crucial in the league phase. But Buttler’s departure for national duty leaves a void. His replacement, Kusal Mendis, has big shoes to fill.
Mumbai Indians, too, are coping with player departures. Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks have returned to international commitments, forcing MI to bring in Jonny Bairstow, Richard Gleeson, and Charith Asalanka. Bairstow is expected to partner Rohit Sharma at the top.
