New Delhi: Mohsin Naqvi, who has been in the spotlight for taking the Asia Cup 2025 trophy and refusing to hand it to the winning Indian team, has reportedly been asked to pick between his roles as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Interior Minister. Critics believe he has found it difficult to handle both responsibilities effectively.
Reports suggest that Shahid Afridi, a former all-rounder, reportedly urged Naqvi to pick one of his roles in the wake of Sunday’s Asia Cup controversy. Naqvi’s dual role as President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) further complicates matters.
Pakistan ended the regional tournament as a runners-up, but their repeated defeats to India in the Asia Cup have drawn criticism of the team’s batting performance and the PCB’s leadership.
Telecom Asia Sport said on Tuesday that Naqvi’s board leadership is currently being closely examined. “My request or advice to Naqvi Saheb is that you have two very important posts, and they are big jobs and need time. PCB is totally different from the Interior Ministry, so they must be kept separate.” Afridi said
Afridi also stated that a decision should be made immediately, “It would be a big decision and should be taken as soon as possible. Pakistan cricket needs special attention and time,” he told telecomasia.
He further slammed Naqvi’s advisers, “Naqvi cannot rely totally on advisers. These advisers are taking him nowhere, and he himself admits he doesn’t know much about cricket,” Afridi said.
Afridi emphasized the importance of having qualified cricket advisers, “He needs to appoint good and knowledgeable advisers who understand the game,” he said.
The report highlighted that Afridi has openly criticized Naqvi for holding two positions, though his warnings have mostly been ignored. Sources added that Afridi even recommended to the country’s army chief that Naqvi resign from one role to concentrate fully on the other.
Mohsin Naqvi demanded that he would personally present the trophy to team India. After India declined to receive it from him, he had the Asia Cup trophy and medals removed from the stadium and left the venue, leaving the Indian team and fans to celebrate on their own.
Following the Asia Cup final, Mohsin Naqvi insisted on presenting the trophy personally. When India declined, he ordered the trophy and medals to be removed from the stadium and walked out, leaving players and fans bewildered and dampening what should have been a celebratory moment.
