New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has remarked that Rohit Sharma, although not reckless in his batting style, seems to have lost confidence in his defensive technique, leading him to opt for big shots instead. Rohit has struggled with form recently, contributing to India’s disappointing 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand.
Analyzing Rohit Sharma’s technique, Manjrekar chose not to label his approach as reckless, emphasizing that he has his unique method of accumulating runs.
“I will never say that he is reckless because he is finding his way to ensure that he gets runs, to get the team to win. He doesn’t trust his defence anymore, you could see that, there was an lbw appeal and that must have just made him feel unsettled ever more,” Manjrekar said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo.
“But the shot that he played to get out was where he was trying to hit the ball into the stands rather than just make the connection. He is missing a few of his big hits. There was one in the first Test as well, where he stepped out and tried to hit the ball out of the ground, so he is mis-hitting a lot of his attacking shots,” Manjrekar added.
This year, Rohit has amassed 588 runs in 11 Tests, including two centuries, both of which were scored against England. However, in his subsequent 10 innings, he has managed to register only one half-century.
India will face Australia in a pivotal five-Test series starting later this month, and Rohit Sharma’s performance will be vital for his team’s chances of securing victory.
