New Delhi: On Thursday, September 25, the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar made a major change to the India A cricket team. Rajat Patidar, who led the team against Australia A in the first match, was not named India A captain and was dropped from the team. Shreyas Iyer was appointed India A captain in his place. Iyer has previously captained India A in all formats. However, Rajat’s departure from the team does not indicate that he will not receive a chance in the future.
While Rajat was removed from India A, he was appointed captain of the Rest of India team in the Irani Cup. This indicates that the selectors plan to give him an opportunity in the middle order.
The selection committee had to make this change due to Shreyas Iyer’s back problem. Iyer has taken a break from red-ball cricket because of this issue. His exclusion from the original India A squad signaled that he was making a return to the Test team.
Now that Iyer will be out of red-ball cricket for six months, the team needs another batsman in the middle order. Rajat’s inclusion in the Irani Cup squad indicates that if he performs well, the selectors may give him a chance to return to the team. He recently led Central Zone to victory in the Duleep Trophy.
Rajat Patidar was selected for the Test squad for the 2024 England series and made his debut in the second match in Vizag. He scored a total of 63 runs in three Tests before being dropped.
Rajat has been unable to return to the Test team since then. But now he is back in the selectors’ plans and could return to the red-ball team.
Tilak Varma will assist Shreyas Iyer in the final two unofficial ODIs. Tilak was originally scheduled to lead the team in both matches.
