Aizawl FC registered an emphatic 1-0 victory against Mohun Bagan and went closer to winning their maiden I-League. The hosts won the match by a solitary goal from Zotea at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on Saturday. They needed to score two goals to win the title but in a grueling match at a rain-marred match, Aizawl emerged as the winner with one goal.
Their victory almost ruined Mohun Bagan’s wish to reclaim the title since 2014-2015 seasons. With this victory, Aizawl grabbed the pole position of the point table with 36 points in 17 matches. They are on the brink of creating history as they all set to become first North-East team to win the I-League title.
This was the second meeting between the Mizoram side and Kolkata giant in 2016-2017 I-League. In the first meeting, Mohun Bagan defeated them by a 3-1 margin. Now, they have to wait for their next game where a victory will help them to win the coveted I-league title.
In the first half of the games, both teams created numerous opportunity but they were denied each other’s goal mouths. However, Aizwal with the support of the capacity home fans put up a passionate display in the second-half and they got the result for putting extra efforts. However, their bid for a goal was denied by Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul till the dying minutes. Finally, they managed to break the defensive chain of Mohun Bagan just five minutes before the game as Zotea perfectly placed his header to the goal from the corner.
With just a few minutes left, a dented Mohun Bagan side failed to make any comeback. Now, they hardly have a chance to bounce in the title race as with only one game left in hand a draw against Shillong Lajong FC will be enough for Aizawl to lift the title. But, if Aizawl lost their last game against Shillong Lajong and Bagan manage to win against Chennai City FC their forthcoming game the equation will be changed. With better head-to -head to record Bagan will lift the trophy. To make it happen Aizwal have to concede a defeat, which unlikely to happen.
