Against everyone’s expectations it was Dwayne Smith and not Chris Gayle who played a blistering innings to power the West Indies to a total of 171. Similar to the game against India the West Indian openers started off cautiously, the only difference being that one of them actually got going once they saw through the opening overs.
Even as Chris Gayle was struggling to get going, Dwayne Smith in quite an amazing fashion struck the Bangladeshi bowlers to all the parts of the ground on his way to score 72 runs of only 43 deliveries. The Bangladeshi bowlers adopted the same strategy to Gayle to start the innings as they bowled on his pads in tandem. Chris Gayle struggled throughout the innings right until the 17th over when he showed some sort of form as he struck Shakib for a boundary and six on consecutive delivery.
The Bangladeshi bowlers bowled extremely well to start with, but lost their way once Dwayne smith got going. After Dwayne smith’s dismissal though they tried to get hold of things again but it was too late till then. Things got worse in Shakib’s 17th over when Rahim let 2 byes which ultimately earned the West Indians 8 extra runs, after that Gayle scored 10 more runs of the last two deliveries to take the total to 21 runs from that over. The West Indians were struggling to get going until then, but that one over proved to provide the momentum that they needed.
But Al Amin managed to pull things back in the last over as four wickets fell in his last over and West Indies could only manage 4 runs of it. The West Indian couldn’t manage to hold on to the momentum created in the preceding overs and could only manage a total of 171
Brief score: West Indies: 171/7 (Dwayne smith 72, Chris Gayle 48. Al Amin 3/21, Zia ur Rehman 1/16)
